Term 4 and whole year recount!

I think the past year has been one of my best. My time as a student at Wainui Beach School is drawing to a close, but I have had a rich six years as a student of this school. I feel I am ready to transition to Gis int and I want to end the year on a high.

I think one of the best experiences from this year has been Camp Kaitawa and the Google Summit in Auckland. They were both out of Gisborne and were both well worth the trip. I have had lots of experiences this year, such as Inter School rugby, School Patrols, House Captains, and many many more. I have achieved lots this year and I hope to achieve more and new things at intermediate. I hope to achieve my goal for the end of the year, which is to win the Kohn cup, which would be the best possible way to end the year for me. For those who do not know, the Kohn cup is a cup presented to a year six boy and the winner gets their name placed on the wooden board at the back of the hall. There is also the Collier cup for year six girls.

Again, I think I have had an awesome time this year and in my time at WBS and I will be content when I leave this school. I learnt so much and will learn more in my new school. Some of my friends are going to different intermediates and I will have the opportunity to make new friends, while retaining some friends from WBS. Please leave a comment.

Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival recount!!!

Marching proudly up the steps to the Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival, Nui Syndicate stepped onto the stage. This was it. This was the moment we practised terms for. The silence was nerve racking. I waited for the guitar to start and I started singing. I strode forwards, confident and strong, and stopped once I got to the front of the stage. I sang for a moment longer, finished, and waited for the rest of us to join in. We started singing as one, our voices being projected across the hall, resounding off the walls and filling the air, and this was only the first song.

So, as you can probably tell from the first paragraph and the title this was at the Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival. The whole school did this yesterday (20/11/19), and we have been practising since the start of this year. I was so proud one of the kaias (leaders) for the performance and I think we did a fantastic job of performing the routine. Although I did find the haka and haramai a paoa were very fast. The people who did our ta moko did an excellent job at putting them on and I thank them for doing a very good job. The kaias for the haka had a full face and the rest of the boys only had them on their cheeks.

Our order of songs go like this: Tu Mai Ra, Haramai A Paoa, Ka Pioioi, Puria Nei, Utaina, The Wainui Haka, Ka Mate, Wainui e, and He Honore. Again, I think that we did a good job at the festival and I think that that was one of our best performances. I hope that the opportunity arises to do this again next year at Gis Int.

Culture city!

In the past three weeks of term 4 in MLH we have had new priorities introduced to us. So, each week we have two cultures and we have to choose one and write information on a readymade sheet. It has been harder than I thought but it has been fun learning about new cultures and their rituals and stories. I think it's funner than the other priorities that we have done. But, I think it takes more time to do it, as we have to do a plan, then put the plan onto the paper, a national costume, AND basic facts. But I think I will get used to it and get it done quicker. I know that it takes more time because I used to get all my priorities done on wednesday, but now I get them done on a thursday. Please leave a comment.

Tabloids day! :D

Last term in the last week before the holidays Moana Learning Hub organised and set up a tabloids day for the whole school. I forgot to do a blog post about last tem so I am doing one now. My buzz group and I organised gumboot throwing and I think it ran reasonably smoothly and I went very well. I remember tabloids day when I was little and I remember it being super fun. Hopefully it was super fun for everyone and they all enjoyed playing. The other stations that the other buzz groups organised looked super fun as well and I think everyone had a blast. (although i did get a bit bored at one stage because I was just lying down and keeping the score. please leave a comment.

MARAE NOHO!!!!!! :D

Last Thursday and Friday the school went in a visit to Te-Poho-a-Rawiri marae for a overnight stay. We did activities on both days. On the Thursday night nui did our kapa-haka routine, so we could get some feedback on it. I thought it awesome and we smashed it out of the park but that's my opinion. I fin kapa-haka really fun and the activities were fun also. On the first day the activities that I did were: Handball, walking, and these log hand-eye coordination games. On the second day I wasn't feeling well so I don't know what activities my group did. Over all the marae noho was fun and it sucked that I spent most of the second day lying in the shade. EL4 PICK-A-PATH WRITING!!

A couple of weeks back in a EL4 writing group we were assigned a task to make pick-a-path stories. I have already done a post on this and this one is about the finished product. It wasn't hard to do it but it was quite hard to keep track of all the different parts of the story. It is supposed to be for years 2-3 and I will link the pick-a-path to the post. please give me feedback so I will have time to change it before it is shared with anyone else. The criteria for the pick-a-path writing was:

  • Construct a text that shows an awareness of purpose and audience through deliberate choice of content, language, and text form.
  • Uses a range of text conventions, including grammatical conventions, appropriately, effectively, and with increasing accuracy.
(I don't even know what conventions are/mean) Here is the link to my google form: My amazing pick-a-path!

Speeches!

Today and in the following weeks MLH will be focusing on writing and sharing speeches! I was in the finals last year but just missed the win. Hopefully I will be able to take it out this year. The topic for speeches is 'Hauora', which is the four parts of our wellbeing. So that covers a LOT of stuff. You can pretty much relate anything to that topic so it will be easy to think of a topic! I have thought about it, and my speech will be about why children should participate in at least 1 sport. I think that because it keeps you active and healthy. It also might change the obesity rates in New Zealand. I haven't started yet but I have lots of ideas for it. It will (hopefully) be AMAZING!!! I hope I win!!! Wish me luck.

Google summit auckland.

So, in my last post I probably mentioned that I was going to Auckland for this google educators summit a couple of times. SO, weh have been, AND IT WAS SUPER AWESOME!!! we stayed in this massive 3-storey house and the google summit was in this super awesome new school that only opened in february this year. I reckon we did a good presentation and I am super happy of how we did. After the google summit we went to the Auckland Museum and then went out to dinner. After dinner we went to this artisan ice-cream makers shop called Giapo and got these super cool ice-creams that you could put on your fingers. After that we went to the observatory on one-tree hill and learnt HEEEAAAAAAAPs of stuff about planets and stars and cool stuff like that. Over all this was a trip I won't forget in a while.

GEGNZ summit in Auckland.

Next week me and seven other people from MLH will be driving up to Auckland to go to this google summit that is happening there. It is an one-day event, which we will be listening to other students of different age present their presentations. There will be students from years 0-13 at the summit and they will all be doing presentations. The one thing I am NOT looking forward to is the 6 hour drive plus stops. We are doing presentations ourselves and our one is about how to use Story Sphere's, Tour Builder, Tour Creator, and Google My Maps. I am doing one on Tour Builder and the topic is Our place, Our journey. That means places that hold significant importance in my life. I am really looking forward to going and it will be super fun! 😁 please leave a comment on my work

Pick- a - path writing.

This week in MLH my writing group has been told that we are going to be doing pick-a-path writing. We will be doing it on google forms and it looks super fun. My topic will be in a post-apocalyptic highway after an atomic war and you will be trying to get back on the safe highway in a car. I got my inspiration from fighting fantasy which are pick a path books but they are just so good. I have 5 fighting fantasy books and my cousin got me onto them. I will try to remember to post the finished product on my blog but I might not remember. I am really looking forward to starting these and we have only started our planning for it.

Mount Cardrona & skiing

On wednesday and Thursday I have been skiing up at Cardrona. I took Two first- timer lessons and one beginners lessons. On the first timer lessons I went up the tunnel magic carpet and then went down Skyline twice. On the next day I went down McDougals for the beginners lesson and then went down it in my free time. It was my first time ever skiing and it is SO fun. I had to hire boots, goggles, skis, and a helmet. The night before we went skiing it snowed really hard and there was lots of fresh, powdery snow. I hope that I can come back one day and do some more skiing. I will see you guys next week! Please leave a comment.

Salmon fishing and toy museum!

Today in Wanaka we went to go fishing for salmon at this place called Hook. It was pretty expensive to catch a fish as it was $40 a kilogram. I caught a 1.9 kilogram fish and was so excited! The colors were really beautiful and I caught it on my second proper cast! After that we went to the Wanaka toy museum. it had lots of toys but it also had lots of old cars, planes, truck, motorbikes, and even a few boats! There were also pedal cars and when rode on those. It was actually quite a lot like E.C.M.O.T back in Gizzy! (although you couldn't go in many of the cars and all that.) Tomorrow we are going skiing and we have to get up at like 6.30 in the morning. I am going skiing and not snowboarding and I will take lessons. (Obviously). So far it has been really cool in Wanaka and it will hopefully get even better!  Also we ate some of the fish hot smoked. YUM.  I also forgot to mention that we are staying with two other families, and there names are Fish (nickname) and Jo, La, Paula, Ned (In the photo below), Darcie, and Miller. Please leave a comment.

Puzzling world!!!!!!!

Yesterday in Wanaka we went to this awesome place called puzzling world. It is really cool with lots of cool illusions in it. There also was a really cool maze that you had to get to four towers before you were allowed to get out of the maze. The maze was really annoying and it was so big and confusing!!! We didn't go skiing today because apparently the weather was really bad. BUT, I know that we are going skiing on wednesday, thursday, and friday. I am really excited to go skiing and I hope the weather is good (It is supposed to be good but the weather websites can be wrong sometimes).  All the things in puzzling world was really trippy and it was so confusing.

Wanaka!!!!!!!!!

This week me and my family are going to be skiing in Wanaka. We flew up yesterday and today we havn't skied but we have gone for a walk through the town and have had our skiing passes sorted. It is meant to be raining tomorrow but rain usually means snowing in the mountains. This will be my first time skiing and I am really excited to do it! I have decided to learn to ski instead of snowboard because if you learn to ski first then you get better quicker. Learning to ski is easier to learn than snowboarding because your feet are used to moving by themselves but on a snowboard they are strapped to the board. We are staying in this really cool house that is super warm all the time! The view from the living room is awesome as well because it is looking over the town and the lake and there are some mountains for a backdrop. I will be keeping you posted over the week and I will tell you what I did that day. Please leave a comment

REFUGEE

For the first week back of term three we have jumped right into our learning. For our reading group we have been assigned a task were we have to read little snippets of this book called refugee every week and then we have to answer questions about the part of the book we have read. It is a really good book as far as I can tell. It is about three children and their families in different periods of time, trying to emigrate to other countries to escape from war and starvation. One of the kids and his family are in Nazi Germany, 1939, trying to escape from the treatment they get for being Jews. They try to get to Cuba. On the other side of the world. One is in Cuba, 1994, trying to get to America to escape from starvation in Cuba, and the last one is in Syria, 2015, and I don't know where they are going just yet, trying to escape from war and political unrest in Syria. It is a really good book and it is written by Alan Gratz. Please leave a comment on this post. :D.

Term 2 reflection.😀

So it is the end of term two... AND IT HAS BEEN AWESOME! we have gone to E.C.M.O.T, the Museum, Life Ed Truck, the four Pou, ANZAC day, and the Waka Tarawhiti. The inquiry topic has been really fun and I think I have done well in academics. It is awesome to learn about the old technology that our grandparents parents, and great grandparents have used.

I was really proud of my report and am happy to be chosen for the GEGNZ google summit. The next term is going to also be amazing. In the next term I look forward to the GEGNZ. It's going to be superly awesomely cool.

Gisborne herald interview & strike action

On wednesday, the teachers all around New Zealand took action and had a huge mega strike all around the country. Me,  my mum and my sister Amelia went to support the teachers at the Gray St roundabout. It was my first protest and it was really fun. I even got interviewed by the Gisborne herald while I was there. I lead the improvised molenberg chant with koka Sue. About 70% of the cars beeped at us for support. I had a sign and a star shaped rattle to hold and shake. We were only there for about half an hour but it was really fun. I think that the teachers deserve more pay and better conditions. Here is a picture of me:

ESCAPE FROM KRAZNIR!!!!

Since last term, early level 4 writing group have been doing this writing task called escape from Kraznir. It's really cool because it is set around about the middle ages. It's really fun because it is just like being a dungeon master in Dungeons and Dragons ( that's a really fun game you should totally  check it out). It's about a band of spies from the land of Slinsil (a peaceful, rich, and beautiful country) in the country of Kraznir (an evil, warlike country) to steal their secret battle plans. It's so fun to write about fantasy and fantasy is really awesome. You have to escape from the evil clutches of king Krill and get back to Slinsil no matter the danger.

These are the slides here.
This is my story here.

Wheels day friday!!!!!!!

Last friday the whole class went up to the four new pou opposite Heath Johnson park. I had to bike all the way from Grant rd to wainui. (and that is quite a long way but I have done it before). I was at the back and the teachers called me tailing Charlie (or something like that) and I was that both figuratively and literally because I was literally tailing my friend Charlie. It was really interesting to learn about the four pou because It was closely related to my teacher koka Terri because her family had owned land up on the hill so when the road up there was created their family designed and made the pou and a carving on the walkway. Buried under on of the pou are some rocks from the country Israel because Israel is a very religious country and the pou it was buried under meant to follow your beliefs. it was fun riding there and there wasn't much wind so it was good. please leave a comment.
This is the route from home to school:                                                 and this is from Wainui to the pou:

SHINE cards

So sorry, last post I forgot to tell you what shine cards are.  So this post will be about telling you what shine cards actually are. So here we go. SHINE cards are cards that you get if you are showing the school values of respect, responsibility, and resilience by sitting up in assembly and singing, singing well at singing, not being distracted by the person next to you and lots more. And part of my job as house captain is to look for people who are doing those things. Its really cool to be able to hand out SHINE cards to the people who are standing out from the rest. Thanks to koka Ngaire for suggesting this post. Please leave a comment.

House captains, Houses, and SHINE Cards!!

SO.... a couple of weeks back we started having house captain entries coming in from year 5's and 6's hoping to be chosen for house captains. Among them was me. AND, a couple of weeks back the house captains were announced! and I got chosen!!! SO, now I am house captain of mango house along with Isabel. Each house has a different mascot and mango has a shark!!!. The other mascots are: karoro (seagull), kakahi (orca), and manaia (seahorse) I have some responsibilities that come with being a house captain, such as being a role model for my house, setting up for school events, counting the house's SHINE cards, and just generally being awesome. I am so happy to be house captain and I look forward to the next three terms. See you next term!!

Escape from Kraznir

This week and last week in MLH EL4 writing group has been making something called Escape from Kraznir.

It is were you choose two characters from the picture below, and then make up another character. (that character is you BTW).Then you have to make a plan to escape from this evil castle called castle Krill, and then escape the land of Kraznir to get to your home country called Slinsil. You have to make a story were you decide your characters fate, a bit like Dungeons and Dragons if you know that game. BUT, there are some set challenges that you have to do on the way. I have only done one chapter so I am not so far in. But I like this writing task because I really like fantasy. Please leave a comment.

Aurora team Mindlab!!!!

Since last year, me and my friend Charlie have been going to Mindlab in Gisborne to develop a phone app. It is supposed to count you walking to Gisborne monuments, which Charlie and I have been actually been learning about in recent weeks! It is supposed to tell you how far it is from Gisborne or how far to get there in kilometres, were it is on the map, facts about the monument, and star rating. It has been really fun going to Mindlab every once in a while. We are using an app called Appsheets to create our app, and Appsheets uses Google Spreadsheets to make the app, so we have to put the info on the spreadsheet and the app updates by itself! But, it's actually not that easy. BUT, it's not that hard either. I don't exactly know the actual purpose of doing this app so I might have to ask why exactly we are doing this. I can't wait to see the end result of the app.

CAMP KAITAWA!!!!!!!

Last week me and the rest of the year sixes went on school camp at Camp Kaitawa. It was about 2.30-3 hours from school to get there. We had this really flash Go Bus with the best bus driver ever (Don) to get us there. Every day we went on a different walk and my favourite was either wakereiti or panekire bluff. I have tons of pictures to remember the week with and remember all the awesome stuff that happened. I was in a walking group with Seve, Josefa, Miriam, Henry, and me. our group was led by Stefan and Koka Ducky. my dad went on camp with me as well and his group was Bjorn, Shea, Bonnie, and Isabel. I made a reflection slide for my time so here it is: please leave a comment.

Mountain biking!!!

This weekend my friend Nikau and I went up to the fox st mountain bike trails. Nikau had his go pro hero 7 white and we took turns wearing it and videoing. We kept going down this one track called Central skidz (Central school named it). It is really fun and has lots of jumps to jump on. He made this cool video by editing and cutting bits of and putting music on. If you want to see the video here it is: Please leave a comment! :)

Fennel, Grass, and plants

Today at MLH (moana learning hub) we went down to Hamanatua Stream, AKA our awa. We call it our awa because it is our stream in our pepeha. Three or four years back room 2 planted some native trees down at Hamanatua. Over the years the plants have grown, due to room 2 and later room 1 cutting down the fennel that grows around the plants and mulching the trees and the plants. It has always been hard work, but you feel a sense of accomplishment when it is done. Recently we have strode to make Hamanatua EVEN BETTER we put down some signs and made some brochures of what we have done. I was assigned to down under the bridge, so the trees and plants up the top are the ones I didn't do. Here are some before and after pictures:
